A Peek

paint on steel

Hey everybody, here is a peek at what we are working on in Cincinnati this week. That's right, book #4 is in the process of being shot. I can't say too much except that it is going to be Awesome! If you ever wanted to know how to paint on anything, this will be your book. I'll post some more pics from the photo shoot.

Workshop Whirlwind

I have been traveling and teaching workshops from NM to TX and VA. I have met so many fabulous creative people and shared stories and art. I got home with enough time to unpack and repack for the next journey. I am off to Cincinnati, OH to photograph the steps for my fourth book. This has been my favorite book to create because it has pushed me beyond what I know. The working title is Alternative Surfaces, and it will give you all the info on how to paint on surfaces like cement, glass and aluminum. There are over 35 surfaces we cover, and if you are familiar with the other books, you know how much info is crammed into them. Now we just have to convince our editor Kristy that we really can fit it all in. I'll post some pics from the photo shoot.

More Art from the Workshop Artists

I have been teaching a flurry of workshops in the last two months, and I have more that I will be teaching next week in VA. I am so proud of all the beautiful work that my workshop artists have created that I want to share them with you.

artwork by Austin, TX student Jane West
This painting above was created by Jane West of Austin, TX. This is her fourth workshop with me and she is one of the most enthusiastic and prolific artists I know, especially considering her very busy work schedule. I am always impressed with her creativity.

artwork by Karen Waters, Santa Fe, NM

Karen is a dear friend, creative photographer and artist, and also the talent behind the videos I have been posting regarding the workshops. She took the Venetian Plaster class in my Santa Fe studio last month. She had specific ideas of how she wanted to incorporate her photography into the plaster and she has done an excellent job. Absolutely beautiful Karen. Check out more of Karen's art.

Jane Fisher of Santa Cruz, CA

Jane came to Santa Fe for a two day workshop on Acrylic textures and Transfers. I just love this painting that she finished when she got home. Really touchable textures, great colors and a nice composition. You get an A on your homework Jane. I look forward to seeing more of your art.

Thank you to all of you who have taken workshops. You keep the creative flow flowing.

Amazing Art with Venetian Plaster

Jane Rosemont-artist
Jane Rosemont, a local artist and noted photographer, has a wonderful time combining plaster and photography. She completed several wonderful pieces during the workshop and I will post images of them as soon as she sends them to me. Jane.

More Workshop Fun

Curtis, Jane and Mercia look on as I demo Venetian plaster

We had such a great time laughing, learning and creating art that I wished we could have just kept on going. But, this was my third workshop in Santa Fe in a row and now I am off to Austin for a fun filled three days. I love working with Venetian plaster because you can get some wonderful textures, but mainly because of the way you can layer the plaster, paint and then reveal and excavate the underlying layers. I will be writing an online class for Venetian plaster at the end of the year, so stay tuned. I will also be posting some artwork from the workshop participants, so check back and also take a look at Facebook for some more fun photos.

Art from the Workshop Students

Forget Me Not by Anne DeJarnette

Anne and her mother Willa came from opposite sides of the country to meet in Santa Fe and take an art workshop together. It was a delight to have them as part of the March 18-19 Venetian Plaster class. I just sent out my newsletter and I posted a painting that I began as a demo in this class and I just finished it. Below is Anne's painting using the same image transfer.

I have a couple of photos, also courtesy of Anne, of the workshop in process.

Thank you to all you wonderful students and artists. I really enjoyed creating with you and I look forward to seeing photos of finished work, so send in your homework. I am off to Austin, TX next week to teach at Dragonfly Gallery. There are still a couple of seats left if you want to get in on the fun. Go to my newsletter or website to check out all the videos and classes.

Once in a Lifetime

Today is 12/12/12 and the end of the possible date matches until the next century. I like the sound of these numbers. I have synesthesia, or a crossing of the senses. For me numbers are associated with frequencies or sounds. These numbers, 12/12/12 are very soothing, tranquil and rhythmic. I like the hope that their song conveys and the colors that are emitted. I finished a painting a week or so ago and it represents how these numbers look, sound and feel to me. It is called Light the Way.

Light The Way 14x14
I did a meditation today about these numbers and their significance. I considered where I would like to be in one month, two months and twelve months from today. I like to set goals, but I also like to be open to the unexpected twists and turns that arise and to be flexible enough to see the gifts in these unexpected turns. I wish to extend my thanks to all of you who are Lighting the way for all of us with your fresh creative perspectives and your steady acceptance. Keep up the great work.

Alternative Art Surfaces gets Street Cred

Check out the amazing art from the very talented students of Graciela Eulate

She said to me
"My art students from Westmoor High School in Daly City, CA created artwork using techniques that I learned in your ArtUnraveled workshop. The workshop was called Alternative Surface Techniques. Students started the project by stamping and painting layers on one side of a piece of plexi-glass. It was great to watch the cognitive "ah-ha" moment when they realized what was happening with each added layer! They finished the project by spraying a hand-cut stencil on the reverse side which added depth and dimension. The plexi pieces are part of a Street Art unit that will continue for a couple more weeks. To view the artwork and post comments, go to this link: http://www.artsonia.com/museum/gallery.asp?exhibit=559222

Thanks for the techniques, Sandra! This project was a lot of fun!"

Thank you Graciela for sharing this amazing work. You have some very talented artists.
